The Mahatma Gandhi Central University is a body corporate formed out of the Central University of Bihar. This separation has been formed because of the need of a separate Central University for the Northern part of Bihar on account of the vastness of the state.

The University has now been established but is getting operational at the BIT campus located at Patna. The address, email address, telephone numbers are subject to change in the near future. This body corporate is expected to take the same education as imparted by the Central University of South Bihar to the jurisdiction limited to the North of River Ganges in the state of Bihar.

The university was to be named as the Central University of North Bihar but has been named as Mahatma Gandhi Central University as the Northern part of Bihar has been the "Karmabhumi" of Mahatma Gandhi - the Father of India. Gandhi had successfully experimented the concept of Satyagraha through Nee Andolan in the year 1917.

Subsequently, the campus will be located at Motihari in East (Purvi) Champaran District.

The initial expenditure in the establishment and building up of the Mahatma Gandhi Central University will be around Two Hundred and Forty Crores and is sought through the Consolidated Fund of India budgetary provisions of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and completed in the financial ear of 2014 - 15.
