The school is the first in the KVS set up in the city. It comes under Ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI and follows the CBSE pattern of curriculum. The school is situated in Unit IX considered the heart of the city. The school aims at the overall development of the students i.e. in education, sports and other activities like music, dance, drawing, etc. The school organizes science and mathematics exhibitions on an annual basis in order to encourage students to explore their talents in the subject.

| Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 Bhubaneswar, established in 1967, is a much-acclaimed school. Started as a small school with limited capacity, it has now grown up into a full-fledged school running in two shifts. Among its awards and achievements is the British Council International School Award that the school received in 2013. It has also received NABET (National Accreditation Board for Education and Training) accreditation during 2012-2016. The school is centrally located in the capital city of Bhubaneswar, being just 2 km from the railway station. The Utkal University, at a distance of 3 km, is also quite nearby. The school, a co-educational one with both Hindi and English as mediums of instruction, is affiliated with CBSE.
Infrastructure & facilities The school located in unit-IX has a vast campus. It has all the necessary infrastructure like classrooms with digital facilities, laboratories for all science disciplines, including, a bio-tech lab. There are four computer labs with around 140 computers in them. Computers are also available at the library, office, staff room and even in every laboratory, including, art & SUPW rooms. The school is provided with a broadband internet connection with Wi-Fi facility and LAN connectivity. The number of students is close to 2000. Classes from I to XII, with options for science and commerce streams is available at the higher secondary level.
The school has the requisite infrastructure for sports and curricular activities. It has a large playground with facilities for most outdoor sports. Sporting events are organized at regular intervals. Dance, singing, art, drama, debates, quizzes, recitations, etc. are the co-curricular activities that are an integral part of the curriculum.

For higher classes, as per the availability of seats and fulfilling of the criteria prescribed by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for children of central government employees and other government staff.
