Overview
AMIE or Associated Members of the Institution of Engineers exams for chemical engineering are regularly conducted by the Institution of Engineers in the month of June and December every year. Depending upon whether you are a diploma holder or a non-diploma you will have to appear for 13 or 19 papers respectively. The papers are divided into two sections, A and B. Section A being common for all branches of engineering, the core papers in chemical engineering will be in the section B only. Only after clearing the common papers in section A, will you be eligible for appearing for the core papers. There are nine papers in section B, six of which are compulsory and three are optional. Laboratory work and project work form a compulsory part of section B.
Eligibility
Should be 10+2 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Or you should be a diploma holder in any branch of engineering.
Course duration
The duration of the course is not fixed. But there is a maximum duration of six years each for both the respective sections. Considering that you can appear for four papers in one sitting, for a diploma holder it may take a minimum of three years to complete the course.
About chemical engineering
Chemical engineers work in fields as diverse as petroleum, energy, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, clothing, paper, fertilizers, electronics, water treatment, metal industry and household products like toiletries. During development process for manufacturing a sophisticated integrated circuit, a chemical engineer also plays an important role. From common household products like table salt and detergents to advanced materials like propellants used in missiles and spacecrafts, are the blessings of the chemical industry only. As seen above, as a chemical engineer you will be transforming raw materials into useful products. Those who are into research in this field get the opportunities to learn, design and perform experiments to create new products and processes which are less harmful to the environment.
Job opportunities
Chemical engineers work in diverse fields. Not only are they in demand in the chemical industry but also in related industries like petrochemicals, fertilizers and the plastics industry. Opportunities also exist in research positions in universities and industries. Chemical engineers are involved in water and sewage treatment plants. After the course, one can also opt for higher education in the field by doing any postgraduation course like M.E./M.Tech.
