Overview
Pharmaceutical technology is a new and specialized field. It is an offshoot of chemical engineering. It concerns with the designing, development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical products like life saving drugs and medicines. Over the years, because of increasing awareness about healthcare and the thrust of successive governments in promoting health for all, the field has grown in popularity. Even with the popularity, there are too few colleges conducting this course in the country. As such, those undergoing this course have a bright chance of availing the best of the job opportunities in this field. The main responsibility of a pharmaceutical engineer or technologist is to transform raw materials into useful pharmaceutical products through chemical, biological and biochemical processes.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math. Admissions are through entrance exams like JEE Mains. Duration of this undergraduate program is 4 years.
More about the course
The courses on pharmaceutical technology aims to impart you with the knowledge of designing and developing products, designing processes and production equipment and creating the necessary production facilities. It also trains you on concepts like supply chain management, production efficiency, quality control, quality management and packaging of drugs. The course also familiarizes you with the policies and regulations concerning the production of pharmaceutical products. Other than the usual subjects that are common for most engineering studies, you will have to study topics based on organic chemistry, physical chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, microbiology, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemical engineering, physiology, pharmacology and others.
Jobs and opportunities
With the healthcare field growing with leaps and bounds there is no dearth of jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. Instead, the field is likely to grow much more rapidly in the coming years. For fresh graduates as well as those experienced, there are plenty of opportunities in different sectors of this field. Other than in the pharmaceutical industry which beckons pharmaceutical technologists for jobs in drug designing, production, quality control, packaging, labelling, facility design, managing and marketing, there are opportunities in biopharmaceutical and biotechnological plants. There are also numerous opportunities for research in the field in the pharmaceutical industry or in research labs and institutions belonging to the government. Some of the very well known pharmaceutical companies in this field are Ranbaxy, Dr Reddy's lab, GlaxoSmithKline, Cipla, Lupin Ltd, Aurobindo Pharma and many others. There are also opportunities for undergoing M.Tech/ M.E. or M.S in the field.
