Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), which is located in Kolkata (West Bengal), was started as a hospital in 1957. In 2004, it was converted into a medical training institute as well. It is managed and run jointly by the Government of India and State Government of West Bengal. The educational institution is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI), Government of India.

Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research was affiliated to University of Calcutta from 1957-2003. Now, it is affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The college runs various courses in the field of medical sciences, at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

It is not under West Bengal state University.It is under West Bengal University of Health Sciences
