Career Prospects for Biomedical Engineering
There are many courses to study but before selecting a course, we need a guidance before selecting it. This resource is a guidance for the students, who want to have a career in the field of Biomedical Engineering. This resource gives about the scope and various aspects of Biomedical Engineering.
What is Biomedical Engineering?
Biomedical Engineering(BME) involves understanding of health maintenance process and improved diagnosis. It also deals with optimal interventional medical procedures like surgery, Therapeutic& rehabilitation. It is a field relates biology and medicine to improve the quality of life. It is one of the fields, which combines medicine as well as Engineering in to its prospectus.
Curriculum of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering studies involve the study of patient health care and quality of life of individuals. It is the subject, which makes the students to study science, medicine and mathematics to solve biological and medical problems. It involves the study about Biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, tissues and its growth, genetics, medical devices, etc. This subject requires solid foundation in traditional subjects such as electrical, mechanical or chemical related subjects.
Scope for studies in India
Osmania University at Hyderabad is the first university in India to provide Biomedical Engineering at under graduate level in the country. The course was started in the year 1983 with a mere intake of 10 students. Biomedical Engineering is not available as like Electrical or Mechanical courses in Indian colleges. It is limitedly available in very few colleges throughout the country. All India Institute of medical science provides Post graduate program in Biomedical Engineering. IIT Mumbai has M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering to study. PhD and M.Tech programs of this subject is available in Banaras Hindu University Institute of Technology. Manipal Institute of Technology and Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering are the known colleges to provide B.E degree on this subject.
Career as a Biomedical Engineer
Biomedical Engineers develop technology and processes that cure health related problem by the application of their knowledge in medicine, science and engineering. It is one of the tough career option preferred by talented students. BME is concerned with the development and manufacture of prostheses, medical devices, diagnostic devices, drugs and other therapies. This unique field encompasses bio-instrumentation, bio-materials, bio-mechanics, medical imaging, genetic engineering, orthopedic surgery, cellular and tissue engineering for the advancement of diagnosis to improve the quality of life. Biomedical Engineering is considered to be the new course on comparison but it is getting popular day-by-day due to the growing complexities in medical technology. Biomedical Engineers design and develop devices and systems ranging from cardiac monitors to clinical computers, artificial hearts to contact lenses, wheel chairs to artificial tendons. In the hospital, the biomedical engineer may provide advice on the selection and use of medical equipment, as well as supervising its performance testing and maintenance
Job aspect for Biomedical Engineering in India
According to a survey, the Health care industries alone will create job opportunities for more than 2,48,500 individuals in the country. Biomedical engineers are employed in universities, in industry, in hospitals, in research faculties of educational and medical institutions, in teaching, and in government regulatory agencies. Medical Equipment manufacturing companies provide a good salary for the Biomedical Engineers with an initial pay between Rs.20,000 and Rs.30,000. In private hospitals and clinics the pay lies under Rs.20,000, whereas the government sectors recruit for product testing, safety and establishing safety standards for devices would pay around Rs.22,000 nearly. Biomedical Engineers become faculty in Universities, Colleges etc. For college teaching, a masters degree is more preferable whereas a doctorate opens more doors. Comparatively, the job scope is low for Biomedical Engineers.
Global opportunities for Biomedical Engineers
The demand for Biomedical Engineers is very huge globally. MNCs like Siemens are looking for Biomedical Engineers to develop their diagnostic equipments. Countries like German, US are looking for highly talented Biomedical Engineers for Health care researches. Many medical equipment manufacturers around the world recruiting the low available Biomedical Engineers. These Engineers also have scope in artificial organ production industries and researches.
Biotechnology is a field, which need vast knowledge about the various subjects of science, medicine and engineering. It is considered to be the fastest growing field around the world and it is expected that the career opportunity in Biomedical Engineering will get increase up to 21 percent in the next decade.
