A classic movie on Tamil Nadu's history

Ponniyin Selvan was a novel written by Kalki, a celebrated author in those days. The novel was a super duper hit.

Today, directed by Mani Rathnam the movie has been released all over India. The movie is itself based on the novel. There is a part 2 that is due the next year. The novel dated back to the times of the great King Raja Raja Cholan, who ruled from Tanjore, the agricultural belt of Tamil Nadu, where greenery is simply fabulous even today.

The movie has a galaxy of stars and one has to read or at least understand the outline of the novel that had humor and romance also integrated into the historical frames of reference. The movie has been released in Telugu and Tamil as well.

I got frustrated by seeing comments on this picture besides appreciating the efforts of director Manirathnam. As the cinema effect cannot be compared with the story effect, such comments are bad and worst. Earlier there was a film Thillana Mohanambal which run for many more days and highly appreciated by the viewers which was earlier came as story in Tamil Magazine by Kothamangalam Subbu. We have read that stories Thillana Mohanambal and Ponniyin Selvan when they came in weekly magazine itself as well after came as separate book. The film Thillana Mohanambal was also have some small difference from the story written for reading. No comparison should be made between the story for reading and taken cinema. These comments I read in facebook or Whatsapp or newspapers etc., seems to be the showing of personal vengeance and not real interest on the story.

I had read good reviews of Ponniyin Selvan-1 and was unsure whether it was yet another hyped-up film. However, all my relatives who have seen it have maintained that it is worth a watch and definitely very good. It must be seen in the theatre only, they said, due to the grandeur. They saw the film with English subtitles and though that gets a little distracting since you are reading the subtitles rather than focusing on the unfolding scene, nevertheless it is thoroughly enjoyable. They insist that this film is not to be missed and one must not wait for it to be released on OTT platforms.

It seems while in Tamilnadu the film is having a large audience, which is to be expected, in other States unfortunately while on the initial opening days there was a fairly good crowd, it petered out this week and only a dozen or so people went to the theatre to watch it.

I have not seen this movie. Yesterday my sons were discussing this movie. They say it is a good movie. They were discussing the direction of Mani Ratnam and felt that he did very well. I am a lover of historical and mythological movies and I will try to see this movie if not in a theatre at least on a TV. Maniratnam is a very famous director and his movies did very well in AP and Telangana also. But this particular movie is not having many audiences in Telugu states. Probably it may pick up further in the next one or two days.

It is common to make movies based on popular and famous books related to history and culture of our country. Based on the information and reviews about this movie, this one appears to belong to the same category. Many times the director and other technical persons are able to transform the book exactly in an visual format and then it becomes a hit on the box office. The movie making techniques and cinematography are the main things that make a movie watchable and once it gets acceptance with the common public then it grosses a good revenue also.
