Classroom balloon expansion experiment to show that hot air takes up more space (Class VI)
Good morning Students,Today, we will be doing a balloon and bottle experiment to show that empty bottle is filled with air or air occupies the empty spaces and air has weight. And warmer the air occupies more space and cooler the air occupies less apace. A common example in practical life is hot air balloon.
Requirement for the experiment:
We need for this experiment a balloon, a bottle, two bowls, hot water and cold water.
Steps involved in the experiment:
Firstly, balloon has to be blown and stretched. And when air comes out from balloon, stretch balloon again and fix it around the empty bottle opening. Now it is to be ensured that, bottle is sealed. In the next step we have to put this bottle in the bowl filled hot water and hold it for few minutes. This time balloon will start expanding. Then, remove it from hot water bowl and place it in cold water bowl. This time balloon will start contracting.
How does it work?
From this experiment it is inferred that when we place the bottle in hot water, temperature inside bottle increases and due to increase temperature air gets heated and starts expanding. So that the air molecules occupy more space and in turn balloon stretches, and expand up. But when we keep this bottle in bowl having cold water, air cools down due to reduce temperature. And due to contraction of air molecules balloon also starts contracts.
Conclusion: The main conclusion of this experiment is that hot air takes up more space.
That is all for today. Meet you in next class.
