Classroom balloon expansion experiment to show that hot air takes up more space (Class VI)

    Good morning Students,

Today, we will be doing a balloon and bottle experiment to show that empty bottle is filled with air or air occupies the empty spaces and air has weight. And warmer the air occupies more space and cooler the air occupies less apace. A common example in practical life is hot air balloon.

    Requirement for the experiment:
We need for this experiment a balloon, a bottle, two bowls, hot water and cold water.

    Steps involved in the experiment:
Firstly, balloon has to be blown and stretched. And when air comes out from balloon, stretch balloon again and fix it around the empty bottle opening. Now it is to be ensured that, bottle is sealed. In the next step we have to put this bottle in the bowl filled hot water and hold it for few minutes. This time balloon will start expanding. Then, remove it from hot water bowl and place it in cold water bowl. This time balloon will start contracting.

    How does it work?
From this experiment it is inferred that when we place the bottle in hot water, temperature inside bottle increases and due to increase temperature air gets heated and starts expanding. So that the air molecules occupy more space and in turn balloon stretches, and expand up. But when we keep this bottle in bowl having cold water, air cools down due to reduce temperature. And due to contraction of air molecules balloon also starts contracts.

Conclusion: The main conclusion of this experiment is that hot air takes up more space.

That is all for today. Meet you in next class.

The author has well explained the hot air takes up more space in a very good demonstrative classroom balloon expansion. My appreciation for Deepali

Nice. A very simple experiment and very well explained. Really a 6th class student can easily follow this and he will enjoy the fact also. This experiment can be done even in our houses to show it to our kids and explain the difference in volumes when the air is hot and when it is cold.

A simple yet interesting experiment to teach and show it to our kids. The items required for the experiment are minimal and easily available in shops or houses. The experiment can be performed easily and be taught with ease. It will help the kids to understand their concept clearly. Well explained class lecture by the teacher.

An interesting experiment indeed. The paraphernalia required for the experiment are basic and the students can be taught easily. A practical explanation is always better than a theoretical one as it fixes the lesson in the minds of children for long.
Make love to life before it divorces you.
