Chennai Mathematical Institute(CMI) is an autonomous institution which is known for its excellence in education and research in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science. The admissions for the academic year 2019-20 is open at CMI for the below-mentioned academic programmes

Eligibility criteria

  • B.Sc(Hons): For the UG degree, candidate must have completed 12th standard or any equivalent examination from the recognized board


  • M.Sc: For admissions into PG degree, candidate must have completed an undergraduate degree(B.A/B.Sc/ B.E/ B.Tech) from a recognized university. A strong background in Mathematics and Computer Science is necessary for the admissions into M.Sc. Mathematics and M.Sc. Computer Science. Admissions into M.Sc Data Science degree programme requires a background in Mathematics/Computer science/Statistics


  • Ph.D: Candidates must hold a UG and PG degree in the related fields. To hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, candidates must have completed B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Maths), M.Sc.(Maths) and for Ph.D. in Physics, candidates must have completed B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Physics. The admissions into a Ph.D. in computer science requires a B.E/B. Tech, M.Sc.(C.S.)/M.C.A


How to apply?

Candidates can apply to the courses offered at Chennai Mathematical Institute through online mode or can get a printed application form by post or in person.

Application form fee

The online application fee for UG programmes is Rs.750/-

Printed application form fee for all the categories including multiple M.Sc/Ph.D. programmes is Rs.900/-
The printed application form fee can be paid only by DD.

Online applications for M.Sc/Ph.D. programmes are listed as 4 categories.
  • Category 1: MSc and/or PhD Mathematics
  • Category 2: MSc and/or PhD Computer Science
  • Category 3: MSc Data Science
  • Category 4: PhD Physics


If the candidate applies in a single category, then the application fee is Rs.750. If the candidate applies in more than one category, then the fee is Rs.900. Once the application form is filled online, the exact fee to be paid will be displayed.

Candidate can open the appropriate online application link and fill the mandatory details in the online application form. Once the details are filled, the application form fee can be paid online or by DD.
If you wish the pay the application fee by DD, follow the instructions as mentioned in the application form. The demand draft for the fee amount should be taken in favor of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai. and must be sent along with a printed Payment Advice generated through the application form.

Note: For B.Sc(Hons) programme, the candidates need not to specify the name of the course at the time of applying. The choice of selection can be done after admission

The printed application form and the information brochure can be obtained from CMI via a post by sending a Demand Draft for Rs. 900/- in favor of Chennai Mathematical Institute, drawn on any bank, payable at Chennai to the below-mentioned address by courier or speed post.

  1. While applying, the candidates must clearly mention the name, address and the programme(s) they are applying for
  2. For M.Sc/Ph.D. the candidates can apply for multiple programmes by sending a single DD.


Selection process

For admissions into all the academic programmes offered at CMI except Ph.D. in Physics, candidates must take a common entrance examination conducted by CMI.

Based on the prior academic record and the entrance exam scores of the candidates, the admission committee of CMI will shortlist the candidates and will call them for an interview. The selection of candidates for all the degree programmes will be done based on the performance of the candidates in the interview process.

For admissions into Ph.D in Physics, no separate CMI entrance examination is conducted. Instead, the candidates must take the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2019) in Physics. Candidates within the top 300 ranks in JEST-2019 will be qualified for interview. After filling out the CMI form for Ph.D. in Physics and paying the application fee, candidates must send a scanned copy of JEST scorecard and application ID to phdphy2019@cmi.ac.in .

If the candidates who wish to apply for Ph.D. in Mathematics are been awarded the NBHM Ph.D. Fellowship, then he/she can directly attend the interview without writing the CMI entrance examination. After filling out the CMI form for Ph.D. in Mathematics and paying the application fee, candidates must send a scanned copy of NBHM scorecard along with BSc and MSc academic transcripts and application ID to phdmath2019@cmi.ac.in

If the candidates who wish to apply for Ph.D. in Computer Science have already taken JEST-2019 in Theoretical Computer Science, then he/she can directly qualify for the interview based on their JEST performance without writing the CMI entrance examination. After filling out the CMI form for Ph.D. in Computer Science and paying the application fee, candidates must send an email to phdcs2019@cmi.ac.in and inform the management that they have written JEST-2019 in Theoretical Computer Science.

Note: For admissions into Ph.D. programmes via NBHM and JEST-2019, candidates will receive a notification from the admissions committee of CMI if he/she is qualified for the interview based on their scores in NBHM and JEST. If not qualified, then CMI will not send a notification and the candidates must write CMI entrance examination to qualify for the interview.
