DTH Service Providers in India

With the liberation of Cable Tv market in India, DTH (Direct to Home) concept came to picture where any individual person can watch the TV channels without any cable connections. With a Set Top Box, Disc Antenna and connection from the provider can watch various programs paying less in his convenient at his home. Initially Doordarshan has started the service but DTH service became more popular after DTH service from Zee Network named DishTv. Gradually other companies joined in the race, so at present there are 6 major private DTH service providers are operating in various parts of the country. Here are the some information regarding the DTH service providers.

01. DishTV : DishTv is the first private KU-band DTH entertainment service provider in India. It has started the operation in 2004 by Essel Group of Zee Network Enterprises. At present it provides upto 400 channels for its subscribers with DVD quality picture and stereophonic sound through its digital
transmission. There is no barrier to geographical condition, so you can enjoy Tv programs being present at any part of the country. It supports EPG (Electronic Programming Guide), so you can have complete list of programs week ahead of the telecast. Recently it uses NSS-6(initially INSAT) to broadcast its programs. 02. TataSky : TataSky is a joint venture between TATA Group & Star TV launched their DTH service in the year 2004. It currently provides 171 TV Channels with DVD quality picture & CD quality sound and supports in 11 Indian languages. Subscriber can get 4-day listing of all programs in English or Hindi and supported by 24x7 service support. It provides variety of subscription options with minimum Rs. 160/- per month. Recently it has introduced a new value added service known as TataSky+ where you can record your favorite programs and view later. Moreover TataSky is regarded as the better service provider to the subscriber.

03. BigTv : Reliance joined with DTH service in India with the launch of BIGTV which is a part of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. BIG TV is powered by MPEG – 4 technology for the first time in India for pure digital viewing experience. It provides 7 day advanced Programme Guide with description, 24x7 customer support, Parental Control option, multiple channels & easy recharge of subscription.

04. Digital Tv : Mobile major Airtel has launched its DTH operation in the brand name of Digital Tv in 2008 has got tremendous success within a year of operation powered by DVD quality picture & sound, instant support, low tariff (monthly min of Rs 125/-). It has included the WorldSpace radio service exclusively for music lovers. The set top box remote can be setup both for using the DTH BOX & Tv making it simple for viewers.

05. Sun Direct : Sun TV is youngest entrant to DTH market in India in the name of Sun Direct. It uses he latest MPEG-4 based technology and company claims to be India's first MPEG-4 and High Definition (HD) DTH servie provider. It provides 170+ Tv channels & 31 radio channels with DVD quality picture & CD quality sound with lower tariffs plans.

06. Videocon D2H : D2H is the DTH wing of Electronic major Videocon. D2H Services are available through Satellite LCD, Satellite TV, Satellite DVD as well as a Satellite Box (STB) from Videocon. It uses MPEG-4 with DVB S2 technology for crystal clear picture & sound experience. It provides various tariffs with a minimum 120 channels for Rs. 150/- per month.

Doordarshan DD Direct Plus

with its website address as

I think this is the only govt undertaking DTH service prevailing in India.
