An Intranet is used for private purpose in a fixed area.Comsider a reputed college.It wil have an intranet connecting all the blocks of the college and the information of the college is shared in common through the college server.Files and information like E-books can be shared in between blocks and students inside the campus.You cannot access the site and download the files and information of the Intranet when the scope of the net is exceeded.Suppose considering the same example of the college, you cannot download the files placed in the college from your home.Address of the Intranet homepage will also be like ip address with numbers.
While coming to Internet, It is a network between group of networks.Internet scope is whole world and you can download any file and view any information upload from any corner of this world.There is no restriction for a particular zone.Files amy be downloaded from intranet with high speed when compared to internet.
--Concept of Internet--
A network is simply a group of computers that are connected together for sharing information and resources.
Several such networks have been joined together across the world to form what is called as the internet.
Thus,it is a network of networks. The term internet has been coined form two terms,interconnection and network.

Thousand of computers connected together by different means. On any given day, it connects more than 30million users in over 100countries.

The Internet was originally a military project used only for defense purpose by the U.S. Deparnent of defense,which supported the defense research,by using advanced computers and networking.
Around 1970,the advanced research projects agency,part of the department of defense,set up the APPA net as the first parts of what would become the internet,with just 4 computers.
