Karla caves are situated around 11 Km. away from Lonavala. Place is belongs to hill station category. Intercity buses from Lonavala are available to approach Karla Caves. Pune is the nearest city around 75 km away from Lonavala and from Mumbai it is about 107 Km. Karla Railway Station is situated around 3 Kilimeters from the caves & the Karla Devi Temple.
Caves are Rock cut structure that is most basic and ancient form of architecture. These type of structures are well tailored to Indian conditions, both material and spiritual. They are cool in summer and warm in winter; cave temples are well adpated to the Indian typical weather.
Low cliffs often mean waterfalls, a stram or simply water percolating down from the tableland above. Unfortunately, this pretty representation of dense forests and welcom waterfalls is a mania of the ancient times.
The Karla caves are built by Buddhist monks. From the late second century BC till the mid-second century AD, thousands of caves like Karla were built in Sahyadri Hills. They were apparently all for Buddhist communities. These cave sites were not accidentally chosen; they were selected in accordance with Buddhist prescription that the holy man should live neither too near nor to far from the cities and not too near to be distracted.
