Study of good manners belongs to education and not just to schooling. Therefore it is a life-long process. Yet school plays an important role in that long process of making gentleman out of us.

Punctuality

Make it a point never to arrive late at school. If you ever noticed it is nearly the same boys and girls who make a last minute dash and come in breathlessly to find their place in the assembly. If you are late for class, don't make straight for your place, nor loiter near the door, but approach
your teacher, bid him the time of the day with correct form of address-Sir, Miss, Sister- and ask to be excused. Do not invent an excuse. Remember unless you get rid of this habit now, it is going to become a serious social handicap for you when your school days are over.

Behavior inside the classroom

As soon as the signal for the glass is given, go with the others to your classroom and take your seat quietly. Actually, this can be done without the usual poking, tripping or kicking you companions on the way. In the absence of teacher conduct yourself like a gentleman.

When the teacher enters the room, stand up respectfully and keep standing until the teacher takes his/her seat or when you are asked to sit down. Stand up in respect when spoken to or questioned by the teacher. Stand up straight. Answer in a clear, distinct and sufficiently loud voice, so that the whole class as well as the teacher can hear you. If you miss a question, do not answer at random, but ask politely to have it explained. If you need to ask something first raise your hand then stand up and ask in a polite manner when allowed to.

While writing, keep your paper or copy book straight before you. You may rest your right fore-arm on the desk to give your hand steadiness, and keep your left hand on your paper or copy book to prevent it from moving. Always keep your elbows off the desk.

Scrawling on walls or doors and carving on desks or chairs is an unhealthy practice. Eating in a class is also a reprehensible habit.

Pay attention at what is being taught. Do not talk when the class is on, if, however you need something desperately from your neighbor, ask for it in a whisper or with a calm gesture. Do it openly and not furtively when your teacher's back is turned. Shouting, hand clapping, pounding of desks do not belong to a classroom decorum. Serious study requires an atmosphere that does
not profit from such boisterous manifestations of joy. Laughter is in place when something really funny takes place or is said, but keep your laughter always under control.

Never laugh at the mistakes of fellow students. You either know the answer or you not. If you do, you gain nothing by calling attention to his error and if you do not, you should be using your energy to find the answer rather than laugh at another student's error. Besides your indiscreet laugh may have serious repercussions on the mind of that particular student.

It is not polite to interrupt a person in a conversation anywhere. It is much more so when the speaker is a teacher and the place a classroom. Do not argue in a class. You will at times ask questions that the teacher may not answer satisfactorily, no matter how hard he tries. Either he hasn't understood your question or you haven't understood his answer and no amount of talking
back and forth in the class will solve the problem. Psychologically it is not the right place for it and it is not polite for you to keep arguing the point in the class. Your classmates become restless and the teacher is restless. Everyone feels that the time is being wasted. Even if the teacher does
not want to cut you off by a curt remark, you should sense the atmosphere in the class and end the discussion. Later on you can, and really should, go to speak with the teacher privately about the point.

When the need arises, be the first one to offer help- may be to shift a desk, open a window or pick up the papers that have slipped off the teacher's desk. This sort of readiness now, will serve you in good stead throughout your life. You will not have that stiff muscle affliction which makes some
people awkward about offering little courtesies to others.

If you are called to the Principle's office or to the teacher's desk, and you find someone already there, wait quietly until you are noticed. If the teacher is talking to another pupil, stand back a little. Don't be a sneak, trying to glance over a teacher's shoulders to see what he is writing or
steal an opportunity to read a paper placed on the table.

Along the Corridors

When the class is over, stand with the rest in silence until the teacher has left the room. Don't rush out of the room, slamming or swinging the door on someone's face and go bumping down the corridors, using your elbow as propellers, administering jolts to everyone and knocking down books from others hands. This kind of behavior is positively dangerous.

At the cafeteria

As anywhere on the campus, be neat and clean at the cafeteria. Mind your table manners. Return your tray and dishes (if that is the practice) to the proper places and drop papers waste into receptacles. If you are careless about this, you will have people wondering what your home looks
like !

School games and sports

Learn as many indoor and outdoor games as possible and happily take part in regular school games. Remain always a true sportsman, whether you are watching a game or playing it. As a spectator show your enthusiasm and take part in cheering the competitors. You must, however, recognize that school games are mostly friendly competitions played with good grace by both the teams. Cheer your school or your house team but do not be abusive about the opposition team. Be magnanimous and applaud the winners for good play, even if they have beaten your favorite team.

Besides sports, your school spirit should man that you take part in many extra-curricular activities. Picnics, concerts, plays and special programs are a privilege each student can take advantage of. They make your school career pleasant.

Relationship with teacher

Very often youngsters do not realize how genuinely our teachers are interested our teacher are in their student's problems. In our over-crowded schools, there is not much time for friendly interviews and playful exchanges, but even when there is little opportunity for personal contact you can look upon your teacher as your genuine friend.

It is true one cannot like all teachers equally, but you can always respect the position of all. An insolent attitude towards a teacher betrays a churlish nature, while being surly shows that you are still a child.

Showing affection and respect to your teacher does not mean that you have to be a toady- proffering gifts and attention to a teacher in the hope of winning special favors and leniency. Such behavior is not worthy of a good student.

Relationship with fellow student

Under the guise of ragging do not scare a new comer out of school. Avoid cheap sort of fooling with your schoolmates- like sticking bills on their back, pulling chairs from under them when they are about to sit or making them appear silly by your offensive talk. Try to be edifying, courteous, helpful and friendly to a newcomer and help him to become comfortable in the school environment.

Try to show that you appreciate everything that is being done to you that you are grateful for education for education being imparted to you. Acquire the good name for diligence, good conduct and regularity in studies.
