Each of us seem to dress according to our own whims and fancies and have personal reasons for doing so. But surprisingly none or very few are aware of the real purpose of clothes. It is also shocking that most of the persons simply do not know why they dress the way they do.

Clothes are meant above all to protect us, preserve our dignity and enhance our appearance. Clothes to a certain extent reflect the attitudes of people living in a particular society. Fashions change with changing times and climate. Gone are the days when men and women dressed in a manner which revealed little or nothing of their body. But nowadays there is a radical change in the concepts of designs and fashions. Jeans, flared trousers, minis and so on have become craze of the day. For many Indian youth dressing in western outfits is thing of pride and fashion.

Clothes and style play an important part in the life of modern teenagers. This is evident from the popularity of fashion shows, the avidity with which the pages of foreign and local fashion magazines are thumbed through and the widespread and immediate adoption of the latest styles. Being a modern teenager you yourself know very well that fashions take up a good deal of your time, thought and energy.

Caught up in the whirlwind of styles and fashions yougsters today need to decide if they want to be laughed at or respected and admired.

Therefore it would be wise on your part to keep in mind certain basic principles, regarding clothes. Wearing what everyone wears may do nothing to enhance your appearance. The best dressed person is the one who knows how to distil the most becoming elements from the current fashions and adapt them to his own style and personality.

Money is a problem for most of us. Unless we are careful we may arrive at a point giving up all ideas about a planned wardrobe. Therefore when you go to shop to buy clothes, you should know what fabric and what colour suits you best. Good tailoring should be preferred to a great variety of clothes that are badly designed. Go to a good tailor even though he may be a little expensive.

Your clothes should suit your build. Have a good look at your body structure before you decide on a particular kind of costume you might have admired on someone else of an entire different build.

Great care should be taken regarding the selection of colours. They should not only harmonise with each other but also with your complexion. Our best guides in this maatter are well-groomed men and women. See what they wear and how they wear. You will find that they follow a few very simple rules- simplicity, soberity in colour schemes, good tailoring and designs that enhance their dignity.

A few important points to keep in mind are:

How to carry yourselves in your clothes

One important principle of apperaing well-dressed is to know how to carry yourself in your clothes. You must never be self conscious of your apperance, however splendid or awful it may be. Self consciousness kills all fun and betrays a lack of physical, mental and artistic confidence.

How to sit gracefully

People suggest various correct and accepted sitting postures. Sitting with knees apart may be possibly excused when jeans are worn, but this practice when wearing a loose dress, short skirt shows that you lack sophistication.

What to wear

Clothes must be suitable and adapted to the occasion. What is appropriate for an occasion may vary from place to place and country to country.Generally clothes suitable for daily use at home are not suitable for a religious gathering or an elegant restaurant.

People's impression of you is often determined by the way you dress. Consult your elders if you are not sure what you must wear for a certain occasion. When in doubt remember it is better to be under-dressed than over-dressed.

For Office; you must wear something neat and non-distracting. Your clothes must be suitable for working in. Don't wear a heavy perfume, low-cut dresses and loads of jewellery. Your clothes should be well-pressed and clean. Shoes should be polished and not run down at heel. See that your socks do not droop down over the shoe tops. Dusty shoes or torn socks are bound to injure your self-respect and make you uncomfortable.

Girls especially in India have fewer qualms about clothes, because the sari is extensively used and taken to be the most beautiful drapery. Another equally decent and beautiful costume is salwar kameez. Girls need to understand that with too much skin show their overall beauty and grace is impaired. By provocative dresses girls can catch the eye of boys but will not be able to impress them at the depth of their heart.

Girls understand the allurement of dress, an art they naturally study. Boys do not as a rule understand the subtelty of dress. Until they develop an interest in the opposite sex they seldom dress the way they should. They tend to allow themselves to look unttractive and clumsy.

For years the basic shape of a man's suit has remained the same , with the recent revolution in men's clothing and a new waves of shapes, styles and colours, the lore of what to wear has affected the boys too. But we need to remember we should not be lost in the maze of colour. Try to coordinate your wardrobe around a few colours that suit you. If you have doubts about colour, ask men's wear shops or your girl friend for direction.

We cannot draw up a detailed account of what particular clothes have to be worn for a particular occasion. A keen sense of observation and discrenment will help to solve a lot more difficulties by yourself. In dress and general sartoral set-up, we need to see what shows to best advantage on others. - because it is impossible to see ourselves as others see us- and make the necessary adaptations to suit our individual physique, complexion and other distinctive features.
