Kidney Stones
|
The 21st century has been a boon for patients since various innovations and technologies have ensured that we have a much safer life time. Advancements in various fields have resulted in surgery becoming safer for the patients today. Long scars, tremendous pain, anesthesia, prolonged admission procedures, extended periods of bed rest, blood transfusion, uncontrolled costs etc;, were the accepted part and parcel of any ailment. Things like blood transfusion are considered the biggest sin in the medical fraternity today because of the risk of disease transmission (HIV, Hepatitis, etc) long scars are prone to infection and pain. People with Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiac ailments, etc. are exposed to unduly high risk when operated upon. The list is never ending. Many diseases today can be treated without surgery or Minimal Assess Surgery or Key Hole Surgery. Ailments like Kidney Stones, Gall Stones.
Function of our Kidneys
The kidneys work as filters of our body. They clean the blood of all impurities and hence are essential organ. Kidneys produce urine which is then carried down with the help of two thin tubes call Ureters. They carry the urine to the bladder where, when it gets full, we get an urge to pass urine. The urine is then thrown out of the body with help of two narrow tubes called Urethra.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are concretions of aggregated deposits of varying sizes. They can vary from 2mm to 135mm. The stones in the kidneys can lie silently for year and grow to large sizes damaging the kidney to a great extent. Stones can form anywhere in the urinary system. But they usually form in the kidneys, and grow there without giving much clues or symptoms to the patient. They can sometimes get dislodged and block the natural tube called Ureter, giving rise to sudden sever pain.
Symptoms of Urinary Stones
Kidney stones can grow silently for years together. They may give slight heaviness with occasional pain or blood in urine. But once the stone moves and gets lodged in the ureter, it can give tremendous amount of pain, vomiting, blood in urine, burning in urine etc. Also, once in the ureter, the stone starts to block the urine and the damage to the kidney starts. The tragic part is that this pain usually comes in episodes. In between, the patient will feel absolutely normal as though nothing is wrong. Hence it is important to get checked up at frequent intervals to see if it is still present. Rarely can stones be found in the urinary bladder. They are usually secondary to prostate enlargement. Bladder stones can cause severe pain while passing urine and can cause sudden stoppage of urine leading to an emergency situation. If the patient has a single kidney and has stones in it, or stones in both the kidney, they can sometimes lead to Renal Failure also.
