The ICC champions trophy 2009 in South Africa proved to be unfortunate for the Indian team. In the beginning, they were projected as the kings of One-day game. But the loss in the opening match against arch rivals Pakistan raised issues questioning the eligibility of the so called kings of ODI. Be it any part of cricket, i.e. batting, bowling and fielding, nothing was up to the mark. The one match loss in this tournament proved fatal for the Indian team. Match against Australia was washed out. And West Indies team A was supposed to be beaten by everyone.

So what went wrong and the problems the team faced need to be analyzed. Hey you cricketer!!! Please sit down and read down what I have pointed out below…. And don’t go for an ad show now…are you listening??

How many are sitting in the bench???

The bench strength of the team India is a matter of concern. Post T20 world cup 2007, this team was praised for its bench strength. A new horde of fresh new youngsters had emerged as the match winners. Cricket experts had predicted that they will go a long way and in a new way. Many had shown strong aggression and never to die spirit to perform. But that was for a short time. Hey!!! I need the address of Munaf Patel, Joginder Sharma… And what has happened to Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, and Ishant???

All these youngsters had started on a good note, but could not keep their momentum going. And the problem in case of seamers is a matter of concern. All the new comers had the pace of 140 plus km/hr, but after a short period, it got reduced to 120s. Examples are Munaf, Ifran, R P Singh.
And since Zaheer Khan is out of the team due to injury, no bowler proved to be a problem creator for the opponent.

So I have a question for the bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad. Why the problem of loss of quality occurs with our new seamers? Is there deficiency in your teaching? Or these youngsters go for ad shows and promotional events rather than practice under the sun?
Below par performance by Harbhajan
Harbhajan Singh had a disastrous tournament. The most experienced bowler in this team for Champions trophy, he was expected to be the strike bowler. But what it seems that Harbhajan’s mind was in his Hummer and not in the match. 71 runs for only 1 wicket against Pakistan support my view.

No bowling all-rounder
India needs at least one bowling all rounder. We need someone like Jacques Kallis in our team to support our bowling department. This was a major deficiency observed during this champions trophy. Yes, there was one good all rounder named Irfan Pathan, but he has lost his shine too. This talented player was misguided by many which probably led to his below par performance. (Greg Chappell found his talent but took him to the wrong way)
Though Yuvraj and Sehwag are out of the team due to injury, they should not be having any worry as they are having Birla Sun life insurance. (they express this in their ad)

Inconsistent Yusuf Pathan

He had shown a lot in the IPL I. And he got into the national team due to that performance only. But he failed to show that consistency in the ODIs. In the crucial match against Pakistan, he was supposed to support Dravid at one end, but could last only 10 balls. So he was dropped in the next match against Australia.

Question mark on Dhoni’s gamble

Dhoni’s luck had won his team many matches. In the past, we have seen that he had taken a large number of risks, which he termed as ‘calculated risks’. But these things haven’t paid much during the recent matches. If we remember, he asked Virat Kohli to bowl ahead of Harbhajan, in the match against Pakistan. Also he was sent to bat ahead of the captain himself when Gambhir had given a good start to India’s innings. One thing to note is that Kohli had arrived just a day earlier the match.

Fielding problem is the biggest problem for team India.
There were probably no electric fielders in the team. Kohli was the only exception. Poor out fielding catching crashed the forward journey of the team.

I am a cricket fan. I love when my country wins. I just get delighted when my club wins. So country comes first. But are our cricketers bothered about that?
In the last major 4 ICC tournaments, India had the early exist in three of them. This supports the fact that Indian fail to perform in major tournaments. What happens during big occasions? In the recent past, Sachin has performed well in big occasions, but all of them were of bilateral of triangular series. Bilateral or triangular series have no significance when compared to world cups or champions trophy.

ICC ODI World Cup 2007 – 1st round exist
ICC T20 world cup 2007 South Africa – Winner
ICC T20 World Cup 2009 England – Early exist
ICC Champions Trophy T20 South Africa – 1st round exist.

On the other hand, Australia, in the recent 5 years have won everything except the World T20 cup. But there performance in other formats has been good.

Suggestion for selectors
Please select players who have been consistent in the domestic level for years. Don’t make the IPL as the criteria for selection of national players. Now Dhoni has himself admitted that IPL should not be event to select the players. This is a contradictory to what our selectors had been doing for the past two years.

Twenty 20 is not a proper format to check the ability of the cricketer. We need to test them through a strict and long process.
The people of our country love this sport. It really disheartens them when the national team fares poorly in a major tournament. Hey!!! Are the cricketers listening??

This is a very good analysis about the Indian cricket, just keeping an eye ongoing tournaments is always will not work out, as the author said the consistency should be the main factor for selection procedure.

As for as Yusuf Pathan is concerned, his performance was so good in IPL-1, on that basis he was selected, later on he showed he can be fit only for faster version of the game, more over I guess he has not been utilised properly, proper utilisation of players in key time is also should be considered.
