The Rules of Life

The Rules of Life is a simple book that teaches you how to live a healthy and happy life.

I first came across this book on one of my frequent visits to Crossword, the bookstore. I bought it immediately, an unusual occurrence for me, since I have never been a fan of self-help or life-coaching books. I was quite sure I have done quite a good job of living.

However, the author, Richard Templar, has written the book in an extremely lucid manner. It is so engrossing that it took me some time to come out of my mesmerized trance.

The book contains a set of rules, numbered 1-100, with an explanation of why and how they will improve your life. Many of them are plain common sense, but some, admittedly, cannot be followed without paying due attention. Here, according to me, are a few examples that stood out:

• Dress like today is important
• You’ll never understand everything
• Be the first to say sorry
• Don’t dwell on the past
• You’ll get older but not necessarily wiser
• No surprise, no fear, no hesitation, no doubt

What I liked about this book was that in stating what may seem obvious, there was yet something in the way the author explained these rules that made you look at life from a different perspective. So, when I read the book, I was not thinking, "Yes, I know". I was thinking — "Yes, I know that, but I also know I fail at that". There are certain things that, in the process of living, do not remain a part of our consciousness. This book attempts to make us realise the importance of these forgotten things.

My favorite quote from the book is:

“Live here, live now
Live in the moment”

It is definitely worth a read, even if, like me, you are not a big fan of this genre.
