Manna Dey
|
Manna Dey, born on 1 May 1919 ultimately got the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2007. Although many prominent musical personalities think that he would have got it earlier. He has a great influence from his uncle, the great singer and composer Krishna Chandra Dey. During Manna Dey’s College days, he was not very serious about singing. After that he began taking singing lessons from his uncle, Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan. He entered the Hindi film industry in the year 1942. He worked as an assistant to his uncle and then under Sachin Dev Barman. At the same time he was taking lessons in classical Hindi music. Manna Dey’s singing career started with the movie, Tamanna, in 1943. It was a duet song. Manna Dey sang more than 3500 songs in different regional languages among which most of the songs are in Hindi and Bengali. Md. Rafi once told the journalists, "You listen to my songs. I listen to Manna Dey's songs only". On 1953, Manna Dey married Sulochana Kumaran from Kerala. They have two daughters: Shuroma and Sumita- both are married Currently Manna Dey lives in Bangalore. Manna Dey has been honored with Dadasaheb Phalke, Padma Bhusan and Padma Shri. A versatile singer who believes in simple living. Two years back in an interview on his birth day he told that the special menu on his birth day was ‘khichri’. A man who lives with values. Still at the age of 90, he always talks about his uncle K.C.Dey. In both Hindi and Bengali film industry Manna Dey struggled a lot to prove himself. In ‘Pujar Gaan’ of Bengal, on many times he was deprived of good lyrics. But all these injustice can not upset Manna Dey’s career. For a brief period, Manna Dey was Raj Kapoor's celluloid voice. Noted composers Shankar-Jaikishen’s first choice was Manna Dey in Raj Kapoor films. But Raj Kapoor favors Mukesh. Still Manna Dey voice was the preferred choice of composers for the complicated raga-based melodies.
