Which TV to Buy ---LED TV, LCD TV, Plasma TV
|
When switching to flat panel from traditional CRT TV consumers often get confuse that which TV they should buy. Following are the criteria’s upon which one can compare these TVs and buy the one which suits him the most.
Contrast Ratio: Plasma TVs have higher contrast ratios than LCD panels. For e.g. LG plasma TVs are engineered to drive dynamic contrast ratio as high as 2,000,000:1 as against 150,000:1 for LCD TVs.
Viewing Angle: A wide viewing angle allows big family to view the screen comfortably at the same time with acceptable image quality. Typically, plasma TVs offer wider viewing angles, than LCD TVs with their image quality remaining unaffected at wide viewing angles while LCD exhibit colour shift and loss of brightness. Hitachi claims its LCD televisions offer an industry best viewing angle of 178 degrees, while its plasma television have no viewing angle problem.
Response Time: Response time is the pixel refresh rate (from black to white and back again) for producing the image on screen. Higher response time results in judder and ghost image formation on fast paced action scenes. Plasma screen refresh each individual cell much faster than LCD screens. So these can display fast motion free of blur and jitter.
Screen Reflection: LCD screens have matte finish as opposed to glossy plasma screens. So these don’t suffer from screen glare as plasma screen do. The glass panel of plasma TV reflects light which makes it difficult to watch in a brightly lit room.
Power Consumption: LCD TVs use a single fluorescent lamp for backlighting. On the other hand, the neon gas inside a plasma TV requires every sub pixel to be lit individually consuming more electricity. In general LCD TVs consume about half the power consumed by plasmas.
Price: Plasma TVs cost less than LCD TVs especially at larger screen sizes.
LED TVs: LED TVs are nothing but LCD TVs with LED backlighting instead of fluorescent lighting .this allows the LCD to have better blacks, contrast and colour while LED TVs still don’t match plasma TVs in terms of picture quality. LED backlighting provides a wider colour gamut than previous monitors as LED’s colour wavelengths have a higher purity levels than fluorescent lamps. LED monitors have the added advantage of longer life span. Samsung is the first company to introduce and manufacture LED TVs in India.
Comparisons: LED v/s LCD v/s Plasma .The brightness of plasma TVs goes down by 30% over a period of 5 years. This is one big factor contributing to lower sales of Plasma TVs than LCD TVs. .On the other hand despite the picture quality advantage of plasma TVs people prefer LCD TVs because their costs have gone down. Also these can be made thin like plasma. .The LED TVs are much brighter than LCD TVs. But LED TVs are coming only in large panel form and are very expensive in comparison to LCD TVs. .For low and mid end consumers, LCD TVs are a good option. .Those who intend to set up home theatre can go for LED TVs but for the same price they can get bigger size LCD TVs.
