Money is a legal tender by which people conduct trade and acquire various objects. It has a variable value established by an international market which assigns it a certain buying power. Money can become an object of compelling desire. Even though money has an objective value, most people have a subjective relationship with money that depends upon their attitude towards the things that money can buy.

People devoid of nobility gain nobility by money. Human beings cross calamity by money. Indeed, there is no superior relative than wealth. So everyone wants to earn money, a lot of money.

It appears as though money can buy almost anything, such as objects, family and friends. Money is looked upon as a source of power, security and happiness. One who has a lot of money is considered to be happy and looked upon with envy. This is a narrow and unrealistic perception of the role of money.

When one enquires into what money can really give, it becomes evidentthat money can only provide some comforts, but it cannot ensure happiness. Money can buy a mansion but it cannot make a home. Money can buy a library but it cannot make one read, much less understand or appreciate what is written. Money can buy the most expensive musical instruments, but it cannot make a person a musician or make one appreciate music. Money can give one the capacity to acquire things, but it does not give one an inner freedom to enjoy them.

One may be wealthy and still not feel rich, or one may not have much money or possessions and yet have no sense of poverty within. The inner feeling of richness or poverty is related to one's sense of security. Wealth does not provide an individual with a relative degree of comfort and security. A true sense of security, however is born of an appreciation of inner fullness, not of external wealth.

One needs to understand the objective value of money and its role in one's life. Money is a means for accomplishing various ends, but it can never fulfill one's need for emotional security nor can it compensate for an underlying sense of inadequacy .

The ultimate end of all human endeavour is to gain total freedom and happiness. One readily gives up things that are no longer needed, like old clothes which are given to charity. Giving up things out of fear, frustration or disillusionment cannot be considered a great act. If one can give up his wealth is an attitude whereby one does not need or seek money for one's inner security. One acknowledges the objective value of money and recognizes the limitations of money as well. With such an attitude, one can handle money in a mature money and share it with others graciously.
