September 17 Vishwakarma Jayanti: Worshiping the architect of Gods.
|
In Hindu mythology, Lord Vishwakarma is the divine craftsman, sculptor, architect and engineer of the Gods and also the creator of the Universe. September 17 is celebrated as Vishwakarma Jayanti in most parts of India in worship of this deity, especially by the communities of craftsmen, factory workers, machine- shops, construction industry, etc. As part of celebrations; the machines, equipments, tools and implements and all other similar articles are worshipped along with the puja of the deity Himself.
Lord Vishwakarma is credited with creation of many architectural wonders for Gods which have special relevance in the mythological texts. For example, Lord Vishwakarma has built Lanka the wonderful abode of the demon king Rawana. As the legend goes, the Lanka was built by Vishwakarma for Lord Shiva. However, after the ‘Grihapravesh’ ceremony, Lord Shiva asked Rawana to make his wish. The Rawana, totally enthralled by the beauty of the palace, asked Lanka from Lord Shiva and thus became ‘Lanka Pati’-the owner of Lanka.
In addition to Lanka, Lord Vishwakarma is also known to have created other phenomenal architecture of which Lord Krishna’s Dwarika and the capital of Pandavas of Mahabharat, Indraprastha- is noteworthy.
Apart from architectural wonders, Lord Vishwakarma is also revered for some of the divine weapons created by him like Vajra of Indra (made from ribs of sage Dadhichi), bows of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva known as ‘Saranga’ and ‘Pinaka’ respectively.
In modern sense, the legend of Lord Vishwakarma can be said to signify spirit of constructive creation, technological excellence and mankind’s thrust for superior quality and reliability in all his efforts. Workmen/craftsmen worshiping Lord Vishwakarma on Vishwakarma Jayanti perhaps symbolizes this very notion of application of human intelligence for overall betterment of all the living beings on this earth.
