Hi all,
Apart from regular curriculum, there are many courses one can take up to enhance their skill set. But the problem is most students might not be aware of existing courses and which one to choose among them. This article lists out some of the widely known options.

1.English language
We all know how important English is in today's life. Almost every job requires fluency in this language. Even ISC is running a dedicated section for English. Acknoledging this fact, a number of institutes are offering language learning course in English. This is offered both part time and full time. The main areas of learning are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Self learning
To improve Listening skills
*See any English news channels. First try out Indian ones like ND TV to be familiar with accent. There after you can try international ones like BBC.
*Watch English movies. If you find problem understanding the accent, include sub titles. Gradually you will understand with out their help.

To improve Reading and Writing skills
*Books are the best source for improving ones skills in these areas. There are wide range of books available in the market which concentrate on core areas like grammar, conversational English, contemporary English etc. Novel reading helps you a lot. I recommend you to adopt this habit. It will yield long time results.
Below are the list of books to start with:

Contemporary English- David Grue
Practical English Grammar- Wren and Martin
Conversation- Grand Taylor

To improve speaking skills
This cannot be developed alone. You need a person to speak in English. Try speaking at home with your family members. Find friends who are natives in English. Chat in English. One thing starters should keep in mind is don't hesitate to speak even if you are poor at English. Mastery can't be achieved overnight. Let your friends correct you.

Third party learning
we can see spoken English institutes in every nook and corner of the city. Don't get in to their trap. They are simply waste of money. Always try recognized government institutes and other certified institutes. The JKC program conducted by government of Andhra Pradesh is one among them. Also, to my knowledge, the best institute to learn English is Vivekananda Institute of Languages, Ramakrishna Math. Many aren't aware of it. Here training is offered not only for English but also other languages like French, Russian etc. New batches start every January, June and September. Courses are economic.

Call centers and BPO training
These courses let you enter in to outsourcing industry. If you are awaiting job or having some leisure time, this is the best way to improve your communication skills as well as earn some hefty money. Training is offered for Customer and Technical support. Telecom, Insurance, Banking and Financial sectors mostly dominate BPO sector. 80% of outsourcing is done from these sectors.

Qualification
Proficiency and good accent in English are the foremost prerequisites. Intermediate/10+2 and any degree holders are usually eligible for call centers. Graduates are chosen with caution (because many graduates work for a month or two and resign their job). Apart from English, some technical knowledge in hardware is essential. In general there is no bond period for these jobs. So they are a good way to spend your leisure time honing your technical and communication skills.

Medical Transcription
Records of every patient are kept for future use. If similar symptoms are encountered, treatment is given accordingly. Converting the information given by the doctors in to records is the work of a medical transcriptionist. He/she should be able to convert the information given through telephone or analog system with out any errors.

Qualification
Any degree holder is eligible for this career. The key skills are Grammar and listening. Understanding the accent is very crucial here. Also the person should be aware of technical terms used in health care.
Medical transcriptionists are given very attractive salaries. Starting salary will be in the range of 8-10 thousand. After getting 2-3 years experience, you can demand 25-30 thousand. You are also promoted to higher levels like supervisor, trainer, manager etc.
Before joining in any institute that offers course in transcription, check whether it is given contract for outsourcing in medical transcription.

Accounting packages
Now a days every thing is being computerized. Traditional methods of book keeping are gone long back. Final accounts are now stored electronically. As a result demand for experts in accounting packages is on a high.

Qualification
BCOM degree holders are generally preferred. But other branch students can also learn these through various orientation programs conducted by training institutes. The accounting languages now in demand are
*Tally 9.0
*Focus
*Wings
*Peachtree
These languages not only cover general accounts but also banking, VAT, Sen vat etc. Once you learn these courses you can start your career as junior accountant or MIS executive. Through experience you can quickly climb to senior accountant and account manager posts.
Coming to choosing a training institute, prefer one which gives both training and certification.

AA Courses
Commerce, Arts, Humanity students benefit a lot by doing computer courses. Unlike graduates, these will not be part of their syllabus. So learning them is an added asset. Courses on following topics yeald better results.
* UNIX
* E commerce
* MS Office
* Multimedia
* Web designing
* Animation
Students with science background can try the following
* C
* C++
* Data structures
* Auto Cad
* Java
* SAP
* Oracle
* Testing tools
* Peoplesoft
Regarding training, always go for standard institutes which offer certification. For example sun certification, MCSE certification etc. Apart from them, you can try out courses offered by NIIT.

These are some of the best short term courses one can avail. These offer both short term and long term benefits. They also give a lot of weightage to your resume.

Regards,
Narendra
