Hi friends,
Both IELTS and TOEFL are tests meant to test the students over all abilities in English language.Lets discuss on their paper pattern.

Both these exams test the student in four basic sections.
1.Listning
2.Reading
3.Writing
4.Speaking

Listening:

This tests the listening abilities of the student. This also judges whether he is comfortable with the native or local accent of a country.
IELTS
Here the student should listen to an audio conversion and should answer questions related to the conversation.A variety of accents of different countries are included in it.The test lasts for 30 minutes and 40 questions have to be answered with in this time.
TOEFL
This section is similar to IELTS.The difference here is the entire conversation will be in American accent. The conversation lasts for 3 to 5 minutes. After that you should answer 5 to 7 questions.

Reading:

The main purpose behind the Reading section is to what extent the student understood the text he read. This section is same for both the exams. The duration is 60 minutes. There will be 3 passages to read. Each passage will be given strictly 20 minutes of time. The student should answer 40 questions.

Writing:

This tests the writing skills of the student. Both tests consist of 2 sections.
In IELTS,first section consists of either a graph or table. The student has to summarize them.In TOEFL,the student should read a passage, listen to the lecture and compare both of them.Second section is same for both exams. The student should write review on the statements of a topic. In IELTS,to get good score, first section should be written in 150 words and second one in 250 words.

Difference between IELTS and TOEFL

Both the exams are meant to test the students mastery over foreign languages. The difference lies in their mode of conduct.IELTS is paper based test. This is conducted in specific centers mentioned by the British council. For listening section, the student should listen to a prerecorded audio.TOEFL is internet based test. That is why it is called as TOEFL IBT.For this you should attempt all the sections on the system with the help of headphones.

Preparation plan:

Instead of preparing from standard grammar books, its better go with books specifically meant for vocabulary. To develop writing skills,a thorough preparation on active and passive voice, subject and verbal agreement, complex sentence formation is necessary.Speed reading should be developed. To improve listening power, try watching English movies and channels like BBC.Speaking skills purely depend on the student's effort. The more you work on English, the better you become.

Scoring:

IELTS rate student's ability in the form of bands. All the sections are grouped in to 9 bands. You will get in to a premier institute if you score a minimum of 6 bands.TOEFL rating is given in points.Out of 120 points,a score of 80 points will be worthwhile.

Test dates:

The student has the flexibility to attempt these tests any point in an year. But he can have a maximum of 3 attempts per month. For TOEFL,date should be booked before a week where as in case of IELTS,it should be before 10 days.

It is better to attempt these exams when you are in third year of graduation as you will be busy in project work and other exams.Even if you get low scores in the beginning, you will have ample time to achieve better results.
