How to get a visa
|
Hi friends, After getting conformation letter from the selected university, the next big step is getting a visa. The procedure for getting a visa is similar for many countries. But there are additional rules to be followed for countries like US, Australia etc.Soon after you get the conformation letter, you should apply for visa.Let me discuss the various issues involved here.
1.Financial status This is a very important factor.Embassies of all the countries keep a good eye on the financial status of students. They will see whether he/she can afford the cost of entire course(including tuition fee, accommodation, miscellaneous expenses). So it is better to have sufficient bank balance covering all these expenses. As this is not possible for all, third person sponsorships are permitted. The sponsor must clearly say the reason for assisting you.
In case of UK,they don't allow third person sponsorships. All the financial resources should be in your name. But they allow joint account policy. Also you should pay 50% of the fee in advance.
Similar rules are applicable for Australia. They too don't allow any sponsors.Resources should be either in your or in your parents name.
Procedure for US visa In general all countries send visa straight to your home after verifying your application. But it is not the case with the US.To get American visa everyone should attend for a personal interview. Also, different visas are issued for different courses. They are divided in to F1,J1 and M1 categories. Regular courses and PG courses come under F1 type. People who go there as per the exchange programme between two universities come under J1 type. Professional courses come under M1 type. Before applying for US visa, you must have the admission conformation letter issued by the respective university. This is termed as I20.To apply for the interview,an amount of $131 should be deposited in HDFC bank.Interview request will then be activated within 48 business hours. After activation, you should reserve time for the interview. This can be done through their official website. www.vfs-usa.co.in
Procedure for UK visa Procedure for UK visa is different from the US.This is called Tier-4 visa.According to this,a scale of 40 points are taken.Out of them,30 are given to the university you select.Remaining 10 are given for your financial status. In order to get maximum points, the university you selected must be a recognized one.Visa is issued only if the student meets the above requirements. Also the conformation letter given by the university should not contain any conditions or restrictions for your admission.
Australia fully computerized the visa process(e-visa).Students can apply online with a copy of electronic conformation of enrollment in hand.
Weightage for entrance exam scores: Some of the entrance exams for pursuing foreign education are GRE,TOEFL,IELTS,SAT etc.Majority of the universities offer admission based on the score you get. Also the country’s embassy will check your score. In addition to this, student’s academic record is also taken in to account. It is good to have a percentage above 55%.
It is safe to apply for visa two months before the commencement of the course. At least two weeks before is compulsory. To meet your expenses you can also work part time after the classes.
Following are the list of documents to be produced during visa process: a.Passport b.Visa application c.visa fee(in the form of demand draft) d.Admission/conformation letter e.Academic certificates f.Course fee receipt g.Test(GRE,TOEFL etc)scores h.Financial statement i.Letter from sponsor j.Income tax certificate of the sponsor
