A.R.Rahman was invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to join as a voting member.The Academy also invited the director of SlumDog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and three other members who worked for the movie to join as members. The Academy invited 134 artists and executives and Rahman was the only Indian on the list.
