Subject:Introduction to Language and Literature in English
Objective:
The objective of this paper is to provide an introduction to language – nature, characteristics, phonetics and phonology, morphology etc. – and the modes of reading a literary text in terms of its understanding and basic concept underlying the literary form prescribed.
1. The nature and characteristics of language. Human and animal communication.
2. Phonetics and Phonology: The description of vowel sounds and consonant sounds, phonemes and allophones.
3. Morphology – the structure of words, processes of word formation: affixation, compounding and conversion – morphemes and allomorphs.
4. Literary form: Novel. (Ch. 1 & 5 from English Literature: An Introduction for foreign readers by R. J. Rees, Macmillan Press to be studied)
5. Reading Novel Text Prescribed: U. R. Anantha Murthy: Samskara : A Rite for a Dead Man. Trans. by A. K. Ramanujan, O.U.P., New Delhi.
