Sodium carbonate( baking soda)
sodium chloride (salt)
Aluminium pan
Method:
1: Place the silver articles to be cleaned in an aluminium pan in such a manner that each article touches the pan.
2: Cover these with a hot solution containing one teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate and another of salt per 250 ml of water.
3: After a few minutes, remove the articles, rinse and polish with a soft cloth.
Explanaition: Touching the aluminium and surrounded by the electrolyte, the silver articles form one plate of an electric cell. By action of this cell, the tarnish of the silver sulphide ( the blackish- grey layer(AgS) formed due to the silver reacting with the hydrogen sulphide in the air ),is dissolved. The sulphur is reseparated and silver is deposited
