Method: Five soaked beans are pushed into the mouth of a test tube filled with mercury an inverted in a small trough of mercury. They float to the top and are completely surrounded by mercury. A control is set up in a similar way, using dead seeds treated by formalin to prevent bacterial growth.
Result After a day, the mercury level has gone down and the beans are surrounded by a gas which, if tested with lime water, proves to be carbon di oxide. No gas is produced in the control.
Conclusion: No oxygen was present, yet carbon di oxide has been produced. Anaerobic respiration must have taken place.
