Technical Details:
We have developed a LAN scanner which finds all active computers and the folders which are shared. Once we have a list of shared folders, we parse and analyze the data present in different document formats and prepare inverted index from it. The data present can be in the form of html, .pdf, ms- word, ms-excel, ppt, text, jpg, rtf, mp3. For each document format we have developed document converter. We provide search functionality using these indexes based on the group the user belongs to i.e. if the user is from administration then he will have access to all the results but if the user is a student then he will get filtered results. Administrator has all the controls like to create, to modify or to delete users, to modify list of folders sensitive to administration.
Intranet search engine have different features like authentication which provides filtering capability i.e students will get filtered results, LAN Scanner which scans through the network, different types of queries such as Boolean queries, prefix queries etc. We have encrypted users passwords using RSA algorithm. We have used Lucene API’s for indexing and searching purpose.We are adding more features.Using Intranet search engine is simple as we have given a user friendly web interface. Based on implementation it is bit complex as it includes several modules on different platforms like LAN scanner is developed in Visual C#, document parsing, indexing in Java and searching in jsp, servlets and apache tomcat as container.
Scope:
Generally all the colleges have their intranet over which a lot of data is scattered. This data is not effectively utilized by students as they don’t have a proper channel to access this data. Currently the obstacle is that user must know the exact location of the desired data. So, we thought we can provide that channel to the students by developing Intranet Search Engine. By using this application students will be just a click away from what they want. We have also provided authentication to various user groups, as there may be some data which college administration might not want to share with students.
Apart from colleges, this search engine has its application in setups like offices, or some other institutions. It has one more advantage that it will speed up the work at office as data is just a click away from user. So, in all Intranet search engine will definitely improve the efficiency of the organization where it is used.
