Seperation of ammonium chloride

Materials required:

Funnel,Cotton plug,Ammonium chloride,China dish,Tripod stand,gauze.

Observations:

(1)Take 1-2 teaspoonsful of mixture in a china dish.

(2)Keep the china dish on the wire gauze placed upon a wire gauze placed upon a tripod stand.

(3)Cover the China dish with an inverted glass funnel.

(4)Plug opening of the stem of the funnel with a little cotton plug.

(5)Heat the china dish till white fumes rise in the funnel.

(6)Stop heating after about 10 minutes (or when white fumes stop rising).

(7)Allow it to cool.

Observetion:

Remove the funnel and observe its inner side.white fumes are deposited on the cooler part of the funnel.Scrap the white powder from the walls of the funnel.This powder is pure ammonium chloride.

Inference:

Ammonium chloride sublime and can be seperated from the mixture of salt and sand by the process of sublimation.
