Characteristics of Cockroach

Materials required:-
Phylum of cockroachc,pencil,observation note book.

Procedure:-

(1)Procedure carefully observe the specimen of cockroach from dorsal and ventral side.

(2)Note down the characteristics of the animal.

Observations:-

(*1*)Characteristics of the phylum:

(1)It belongs to the phylum Arthropoda.

(2)It possesses jointed legs.(arthros=jointed)

(3)Exoskeleton is chitinous(made of chitin) and jointed.

(*2*)Terrestrial hiding adaptations in Cockroach:

(1) For hiding, Its body is of dark chocolate colour.It hides in dark places like drains,crevices and under furniture.

(2) For protection from chemicals, injuries and water, it has chitinous exoskeleton.

(3) It has spiracles(respiratory openings) on lateral side of the segments of thorax and abdomen for exchange of gases.

(4)The body is divided into head,thorax and abdomen.The head is triangular in shape.It bears two compound eyes and two antenna-one below each eye.Antenna is sensitive to touch, smell and vibrations.The head bears chewing type of mouth parts.

(5)It has jointed legs for fast running.It has sensory bristles on legs which guige it duting locomotion.

(6)It has well developed compound eyes and sensory cells on long antenna to enable the animal move in the dark.

(7)It can eat anything found in the drains or garbage bins.So,it is called omnivorous.
