This district has a population of a population of 889,325 as of 2001census Lakhimpur lies on north bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra and so the agriculture there is abundant. The name of the district seems to derived from the Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess for prosperity. There can be another meaning also, since paddy is known as Lakhimi in the local language and pur means full.
As the district was dependent on agriculture and the major crop was Paddy the name Lakhimpur would have stuck. Lakhimpur lies on north bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra. Numerous tribes too inhabit the areas. The most important of these tribes are the Miris, Abors, Mishmis, Khamtis, Kachins and Nagas. The district has been divided into two subdivisions, Dhakuakhana and North Lakhimpur, leaving Dhemaji as a separate district.
Important reserved forests of the Lakhimpur district includes Ranga Reserve, Kakoi Reserve, Dulung Reserve and Pava Reserve. Some of the rare varieties of Flora and fauna can be seen in these reserved forests and wild elephants, buffaloes, tigers, deer etc can also be seen roaming about free and the sight is very exhilarating. Biswanarayan Shastri, Lalit Kumar Doley, Gakul Saikia, Balin Kuli, Arun Kumar Sarma, Ranee Narah have been the previous elected members of Parliament from this area and the present incumbent is Arun Kumar Sharma. of the Asom Gana Parishad.
