SECOND SEMESTER EXAMINATION -2006
BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
QUESTION 1
a.State and explain the Kirchhoff’s current law.
b.What do you mean by the effective value of an alternating current?
c.Three equal resistance of magnitude ‘R’ is connected in delta. Find out the star equivalent circuit if this delta connection.
d.Write down and explain the expression for ‘reluctance’ in magnetic circuit.
e.What is the expression for induced elf in the high voltage side of a single phase transformer?
f.What is the expression for induced end in case if a DC shunt generator?
g.What do you mean by the term slip in case of a three phase induction motor? Write down the expression.
h.What is the purpose of putting a capacitor in series with the auxiliary winding of a single phase induction motor (e.g. ceiling fan)?
i.What is the main advantage of moving coil instruments?
j.Show the connection diagram of a single phase wattmeter for measurement of real power consumed by a single phase resistive load.

Question 2
a.Explain with example the principle of super position .(4)
b.Use the superposition principle to find the current in 8 –ohm resistor in Fig.1 below

Question 3
An 8 microfarad capacitor is connected in series with a 500 kilo-ohm resistor and the RC combination is connected across 200V dace. Supply. Calculate
(i)The time constant
(ii)The initial charging current
(iii)The time taken for the capacitor voltage to reach 160 volts.
(iv)The current and the potential difference across the capacitor 4 seconds after it is connected to supply.(10)

Question 4
(a)Two impedances Z1=2+j6 and Z2=6-j12 are connected in series so that they are additive. Find the resultant impedance in polar form. (2)
(b)In a series circuit containing pure resistance and pure inductance, the current and voltage are expressed as:
I (t) =5sin (314t+2?/3)
And V (t) =15sin (314t+5?/6)

(I) What is the impedance of the circuit?
(II) What is the value of the resistance?
(III) What is the inductance in Henries?
(IV) What is the power drawn and the power factor?(8)

Question 5
(a)Three similar coils each having a resistance of 20 ohms and an inductance of .05H are connected in star to form a 3-phase balanced load. What will be the line current drawn by this load when connected to a 3-phase, 50Hz supply with 400V between lines.(4)
(b)A mild steel ring having a cross-sectional area of 500mm 2 and a mean circumference of 400mm has a coil of 200 turns wound uniformly around it. Calculate
(i)The reluctance of the ring.
(ii)The current required to produce a flux of 800 micro Weber in the ring.(6)

Question 6

(b)Derive the elf equation of a single phase two winding transformer.(4)

Question 7
(a)What is the type of three phase induction motors? Draw the torque speed characteristic of a three phase induction motor. What do you mean by ‘slip’ and ‘slip speed’?(5)
(b)Explain the method of speed control of a DC shunt motor by varying its field flux.(5)
