2005 Biju Patnaik University of Technology B.Tech FIRST SEMESTER EXAMINATION 2005 MECHANICS Question paper
FIRST SEMESTER EXAMINATION 2005 MECHANICS Question 1 a.State the specification needed to define a force completely. b.A rigid body is subjected to two equal and oppositely equal parallel forces . Discuss the effect of these forces on equilibrium of the body. c.Two smooth circular cylinder A and B each weighing W are connected connected at their center by a string AB and rest upon the horizontal plane. Supporting above them a third cylinder of weight Q. Draw the free body diagram for the cylinders A and C. d.What is a plane truss? Stare the assumptions made in the analysis plane truss. e.Define the polar moment of inertia . What is the polar moment of inertia of a circular lamina with respect to its center having diameter ‘d’. f.State the D’alembert’s principle. State its application in solution of problems involving dynamic equilibrium. g.A disc is with a constant angular velocity of 10 rad/sec . What will be the velocity at point A? Also find out the radial acceleration at the point . h.Define the inertia force and state its significance. i.Define impact. Distinguish between plastic and Elastic impact. j.What is a conservation system? State and explain the law of conservation of energy.
Question 2 a.Along a lever AB , loads Q and P are distributed as shown in Fig. 2(a). If Q=2P and the weight of the lever is negligible , determine the ratio of a:b of the arms of the lever if it is in equilibrium.(3) b.Find the magnitude of the pull P exerted on the nail C if a horizontal force of 150 Newton is applied to the handle of wrecking bar as shown. Also determine the reaction at the fulcram point b.(7)
Question 3 a.Find the coordinates of the centroid of the length of a circular arc of radius ‘r’ and the central angle 2ct.(3) b.Determine the coordinates of the center of a 100 mm diameter circular hole cut in a thin plate so that this point will be the centroid of the remaining shaded area shown in fig.3b.
Question 4 a.State and explain , through a suitable illustration , the principle of virtual work. b.Determine the axial forces in all the members of the truss shown in fig. 4 Tabulate the results.(7)
Question 5 a.Find out the moment of inertia of he shaded area about the x-axis. What is the polar moment of inertia about an axis through ‘0’ perpendicular to the plane of figure? b.Compute the moment of inertia for the shaded area about the axis AB.
Question 6 a.A stone dropped into a well is heard to strike the water in 4 seconds. Assuming the velocity of sound to be 335 m/s , find the depth of the well,(5) b.An elevator weighing 6kN is ascending with an acceleration of 4 m/sec-square . The operator weighs 650N. Assuming that he is standing on a weighing scale placed on the floor of the elevator of the elevator during the ascent , what will be the scale reading? What is the tension in the cable at that time?(5)
Question 7 a.Show that the total change in momentum of a particle during a finite interval of time is equal to the impulse of the acting force during the same interval.(3) b.A block weighing 2500N rests on a level horizontal plane for which co-efficient of friction is 0.2 . The block is pulled by a force of 1000N acting an angle of 30 to the horizontal. Find the velocity of the block after it moves 30m from the starting from rest. If the force of 1000N is then removed how much further it will move? Use work energy method .
Question 8 a.A body is projected at a such a angle that the horizontal range is 3 times more than the maximum height. Find the angle of projection.(4) b.A circular disc of radius of ‘r’ and radius of gyration k rolls (without slipping) down a plane of inclination . If the disc starts from the rest show that the acceleration is given by (6)
