MV 304 — MATERIAL SCIENCE AND METALLURGY Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks) 1. Define packing factor and coordination number of a crystal structure. 2. In the case of lead, Bragg angle is 30? for first order reflection. If the wavelength of X–rays is 1.54 Å, what is the value of interplanar distance? 3. Distinguish between hardening and annealing. 4. What is meant by elastic deformation of metals? 5. How will you prevent fatigue failure? 6. Compare between the ductility of grey cast iron and mild steel. 7. Mention the mechanical properties of tool steels and die steels. 8. Briefly explain the effect of addition of chromium in low alloy steels. 9. How will you do tempering of the material used for making springs? 10. Define spheroidizing. PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks) 11. (i) Explain the Griffith's theory of brittle fracture. (8) (ii) Define creep. Draw the creep curve and explain its different stages. (8) 12.
