Use of Would and Should

1) In indirect speech would is used as the past tense of will. Similarly, should is used as the past tense of shall.

He said, ‘I will come.’ (Direct speech)
He said that he would come. (Indirect speech)

She said, ‘I shall go.’ (Direct speech)
She said that she should go. (Indirect speech)


2) Should can be used with first person pronouns (I and we) to express a wish or preference. Similarly, would can be used with second (you) and third person pronouns


Sample Usage

4. Should can be used to express an obligation or an assumption.

You should be more attentive. (Obligation)
She should be more careful. (Obligation)
They should be more considerate. (Obligation)
We should be more punctual. (Obligation)
They should be here in a short while. (Assumption)
She should be ready by now. (Assumption)
